OpenMail is an X.400'88 standards-based, enterprise-wide information distribution engine that supports store and forward messaging over both X.400 and SMTP.

OpenMail's user agent layer (UAL) allows users to connect with Windows, Mac, UNIX(R), NeXT and OS/2 platforms. The architecture provides direct support for Lotus cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail, without the use of gateways or translators. OpenMail also supports P7 clients. Applications can be mail-enabled through VIM & MAPI. OpenMail will support MAPI-1.

OpenMail supports cc:Mail Mobile and includes mobile HP clients for Windows and the Macintosh. A range of network connections are supported including wireless.

OpenMail supports the MIME(1) standard as well as automatic UUEncode/decode capabilities.

OpenMail and Notes users can exchange mail with each other. A directory exchange feature can synchronize OpenMail directories and Notes Name & Address Books.

A central administrator can manage remote OpenMail servers and perform directory changes and synchronization, error logging, and exception reporting.

OpenMail can be integrated with X.500 from other suppliers. X.500 data can be loaded into the OpenMail directories, the OpenMail directory can be replaced with an X.500 directory, and X.500 aware clients can search and retrieve on X.500 directories via the OpenMail UAL API.

OpenMail can be integrated with HP X.400 from Hewlett-Packard or with X.400 MTAs from other suppliers.

OpenMail runs on HP-UX, IBM AIX, SCO Unix and SUN Solaris. It has been ported to DG Aviion, NCR 3000, Stratus, Unisys, Pyramid and SNI.

While stocks last, a CD-ROM is available for free that includes the OpenMail software (server and clients) and a 50 user license.

Further details can be obtained from the OpenMail Encyclopedia.
