MAILbus 400 product family include the Message Transfer Agent (MTA), Application Program Interface (API) and SMTP Gateway plus a range of Gateways providing connectivity to MHS, ccMail and MS-Mail. The MAILbus 400 products are available on Digital's OpenVMS VAX and OSF/1 Alpha AXP platforms.

MAILbus 400 MTA is designed to `88 CCITT X.400 standards and provides a high performing message transport. It is designed for 7 x 24 operation and will exchange messages with other vendors MTAs that conform to either 1984 or 1988 CCITT X.400 standards over an OSI or TCP/IP (UNIX Platform only) network.

MAILbus 400 SMTP Gateway provides messaging connectivity between Internet and OSI networks. Provides users of either ISO X.400 mail protocol or the Internet Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) as defined in RFC 822 with bi-directional message flow with conversion of the message envelope and content as defined in RFC 987.

MAILbus 400API provides an XAPI interface to the MAILbus 400 MTA that is conformant to the XOpen CAE Specifications. It enables development programmers to gain access to the messaging services provided by MAILbus 400 MTA.

MAILbus 400 utilises Digital's X.500 Directory System Agent (DSA) which it uses for storing routing information thus allowing all MAILbus 400 products in a network to hold the same picture for routing messages. Digital's X. 500 Directory Service is an implementation of the ISO & CCITT series of standards and recommendations. Key features are based on the X.500 1993 standards and operates over the OSI and TCP/IP (UNIX platform only) transports.
