Brief description *****************
Product features ****************
MAIL.X is a comprehensive message handling system with a client-server structure. Its modular structure means that it can be implemented in a number of different ways, for example as a server in small LAN based e-mail networks or as the backbone server of a corporate e-mail network.
The main features of MAIL.X are
Message Transfer Agent (MTA) which conforms to the CCITT recommendations X.400 (1988) Message Store conforming to the 1988 standard Open interfaces according to X/Open Client-server architecture Integration with the X.500 Directory (DIR.X) High-performance, central, and distributed administration High portability (SNI and other vendors)
Open gateway concept with a range of gateways to non-X.400 mail systems and telematics services
The MTA together with the associated administration component and the distributed directory service DIR.X for storing all user and routing information forms the core of the MAIL.X system.
The MAIL.X services can be accessed over the following variants:
Stand-alone clients which are nested in standard environments such as WINDOWS or MOTIF Clients that have been integrated into the Siemens Nixdorf office system OCIS Via gateways and customer-specific applications
The following gateways are provided: SNADS/IBM (DISOSS, PROFS, ...) MHS/Novell (DaVinci, OCP, Coordinator, ...) cc:Mail / Lotus MS-Mail / Microsoft Internet-Mail (SMTP, UUCP) Banyan Mail (on request) as well as to the telematic services Fax and telex (teletex on request)
Conformance to standards
The MTA conforms to the CCITT 1988 recommendations with interworking to the 1984 standard. This means that the profiles EWOS A/311 Public MHS Access, EWOS A/3211 Private MHS Accesss, EWOS A/3311, A/MH11 Access to Public and Private MHS (1988), US GOSIP V1.0. UK GOSIP MHS Subprofile V3.0 is supported.
X/Open Interfaces
The X/Open interfaces XMA (message access) and XMS (sessage store) are provided to allow users to write programs for their own user agents. Gateways can be integrated by means of XMT (message transfer). The directory service is integrated by means of the XDS/XOM interface certified in accordance with X/Open XPG4.
Highlights: ***********
Distributed administration: Administration functions are made available centrally. These include functions for the administration of the MTAs within the network, routing entries, operation functions and user administration.
Network management: Automatic and central generation of the routing tables for all MTAs. Periodic or manual distribution of the routing tables. Information about the connection table for each MTA (network topology Determining the "deferred delivery strategy" for each MTA. The message can be deleted before delivery if it is deferred by the send MTA. Functions for tracing messages in the individual systems
User management: MAIL.X uses the distributed directory service DIR.X V3.0 for this, which has been tested for X.500 (88) conformance and has passed several interworking tests. The XDS/XOM interface in compliance with X/Open has been awarded the XPG4 certificate. The following functions are available to the MAIL.X user: import and export of data in the ISO format IEC 10021-1 Annex E / ISO2762 or Super format (ISO + SNI labels)
Accounting:The MAIL.X-SV administration component can store accounting data records on non-volatile storage media. For data protection reasons, these data records are stored in an unreadable form. It is also possible to record charges for telematic services
System platforms MX300, MX500 (INTEL) PC-E (INTEL) RM400, RM600 (MIPS) AIX (being developed) HP-UX (being developed) Implementation language: C
User interface: German, English Operation: menu-driven
Menu interface under WINDOWS: OCIS/PC (MAIL.D) MAIL.D V1.0 and later MAIL.D standalone MAIL.D V1.1 and later under UNIX: OCIS/A V1.0 OCIS/X V1.1
