It is based on a superset of X.400 as the intermediate (internal) protocol so that no functionality is lost between mail systems. Any mail feature supported by any of the attached mail systems is supported by the gateway.
Address translation is handled automatically by the gateway according to rules which the administrator defines. System and mail management can be done by any workstation in the network capable of supporting an X.11 X-Windows interface.
X.500 directory services are integrated into the system and can be queried by any attached mail system or user. Where the attached mail system supports directory synchronization with external postoffices, the UNS gateway will comply. Thus global address synchronization is possible. Where the native mail system does not support synchronization, the UNS gateway can import and export ASCII text files with the address information, as well as do automatic name registration.
If you would like further information on UNS, either respond with your mailing address or call me with that information, and I'll be happy to forward some additional information.
